Easter 2011

Camping Canyon

For Easter 2011 I went to a canyon about 15 to 20 miles (24 to 32 kilometers) south of town. It was windy. I wore my new boots and got blisters and started too late. I enjoyed it anyway. I saw deer and a large lizard and good scenery.

Horses

These horses were near the campground. I hoped to park near the information center there but a park ranger said I would have to pay $5. I parked just out of the park land and went south.

Fossil
Cactus Flower

This fossil is about two inches wide (5 centimeters). The cactus were blooming.

Water Place

This mini-canyon with trees is just south of the camp ground. There is a spring there. I noticed the long straight feature going up the mountain on the right. It is probably a rock wall.

Pool

I think these rocks are fossils. The dots are the ends of long strands or columns. Their sides can be seen on the rock. Water flows from an upper pool to this pool which is around 8 feet wide (2.4 meters).

Purple and Yellow Flowers

These flowers were around the upper pool.

Rock Wall

This rock wall, about three feet tall (1 meter), is the straight feature I saw. This is the lower part of it.

Agave

Going south I saw many ocotillos blooming and this agave. Here are the mountains along the way.

Two slurry planes flew over as I approached the canyon. Here is a panorama looking from the northwest (right) to almost south. Much of the uninhabited flat land to the south is a Army land which is off limits. I can see a cliff at the canyon entrance now.

Deer

I saw deer in the wash or arroyo from the canyon.

There are no roads near this canyon. Since I started late I barely had time to explore. I did see an interesting room or almost circular feature. Its walls are about twenty feet tall (6.1 meters). The room panorama is almost a 360.

From there I hurried back to the truck since I had little time before dark. The blisters made that unpleasant but I got there before it was too dark.
