Canyon Near Town

I went into a canyon East of Taylor Ranch.

Horse Tracks
Lizard
Water Tank

On the way in I saw a trail of horse tracks, a lizard about 3″ or 4″ long, and a water tank. I think the step is to help small animals get out. Most tanks have something like that. I also saw two places where stuff was dumped. Dry wall, pieces of wood, TV’s or other electronics. One had the legs of a large deer.

Water Pipe
Propane Bottle

I saw a 5″ or so water pipe. There was water flowing in it. It made this sound: Click for Pipe Sound. Some of the city’s water comes from springs.

There was a third trashed place but this was from shooting. They left cases, broken glass, and shot up stuff all over. This why the Forest Service is getting picky about the shootin’ place in Dry Canyon. People leave messes. I like shooting in the traditional places in the desert. Please clean up after yourselves and act right.

Canyon Entrance

The entrance to the canyon was scenic. Looking west from it there was a party place.

Be sure to click the panoramas to see large pictures.
— They are larger than your screen. If your browser fits them to your screen then click the picture to see full size. Maybe click again if the magnifier symbol indicates it can be larger.
— Use the horizontal and vertical scroll bars to pan across the pictures.
— Large pictures take time to download. Be patient.

Panorama 1 shows the canyon from near where I started.

Panorama 2 shows the view to the west from the canyon entrance. The urban sprawl goes all the way from town south to the military reservation. The pano stitching program tilted some of the pictures so the land that is almost flat looks like it has some slope.

Panorama 3 shows the view to the east at the canyon entrance. You have to enlarge the pano to full size and pan with the horizontal scroll bar to get the effect of being in the canyon. Seeing the full picture makes it look like you are outside of it.

Trees
Base of Tree

These trees have branches or roots wrapped around the base. I thought it might be roots exposed by erosion but closer inspection revealed that much of it is not roots of these trees. It must wash through here during storms and catch on the trees.

Bottom of Canyon
Cave

This cave is about 10′ tall from the ground to the top of the crack. The main opening is around 2.5′ across.

I rested and ate cheese crackers near hear. I had brought some dehydrated food (a gift, thank you!) and Sterno but I neglected to bring anything to eat it with or to pour from the hot canteen.

Rock Wall
Rock Wall Outside of Canyon

There are rock walls at the mouth of the canyon and one just outside of it. They are about 2.5′ tall and don’t seem useful for livestock. I wonder when and why they were built.
