How to make a pumpkin pie from a pumpkin.

PREPARE THE PIE FILLING

What you will need.

  • 1 small pumpkin about 7" in diameter. These are often labeled Pie Pumpkin.
  • 1 knife
  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 spoon
  • 1 steamer

 

Makes enough for one 9" or 10" pie.

 Cut the pumpkin into slices. Use a spoon to scrape off the seeds and stringy parts.

Steam the slices for about 30 minutes. The skin should still be fairly firm but the pumpkin soft. It will have a different color than the uncooked slices as seen in the photos. Use a spoon to scrape the pumpkin from the skin. If steamed for too long the skin will be soft making it difficult to scrape.

Use this to make your pie filling with your favorite recipie. One cup of this equals one cup of solid pack pumpkin or canned pie filling.

Notes: These pumpkins are usually only available in October. You can freeze this steamed pumpkin to use later for Thanksgiving or Christmas pies.
